rattling sound, not the heat shields 200 1988

Recently my '88 (230K) developed a rattling sound coming from the engine compartment. I took off the head shields when I got it, so it's not that. I notice the sound more at idle, but I don't know if the sound stops upon acceleration of it maybe the sound is just masked by the louder engine at higher RPMs. It's been very difficult to locate by poking my head under the hood. It's hard to tell but it might be coming from the engine itself. It's disconcerting because it sounds somewhat like the bad timing chain I had on my rice burner truck several years ago. I know of course that the B230F doesn't have a timing chain, but is there something that could be wrong with the engine that might give it a rattling sound?

As Jim Holst mentioned, it could be power steering pump bearings. When I had a similar noise recently, I did some research and it pointed to that. Check out the archives.

If you still have it, check the bolts on the exhaust manifold heat shield. One bolt on mine had come loose, that was my rattling noise...

As 240snowmobile mentioned, it could be a bad cat, but that sound in my experience comes more from the center of the car.

To help isolate where the noise is coming from, take a cardboard tube from a roll of christmas wrapping paper (cause it's good and long) and use it like a stethoscope around the engine compartment with the motor running. The long tube virtually eliminates any possibility of getting your hands or ears near the fan blade and pulleys.

Have you checked your downpipe to manifold connection? Recently mine was rattling and but not consistently. It had appeared to be tight. Noticed the looseness by shaking it from underneath the car. The gasket needed replacement as well.

The tensioner has less than 10K on it, so I doubt it. I think it was Scantech though, so I guess anything's possible there. Still, I kind of doubt it.

FWIW, I know you think it might be coming from the engine, but reach underneath and give the exhaust a shake. My catalytic converter disintegrated and pieces were rolling around and buzzing inside; sounded a lot like the heat shields did before I ripped them off.

I had the same problem with my 88 240 and it ended up being the heat sheild on the exaust pipe under the car. I took it off and the noise was gone.

I seem to recall a power steering pump with bad bearings make a rattling noise. You could remove the v-belts one at a time, biefly start the engine, and listen to see if the noise goes away. A bit of a PIA though.

I've got to change a noisy belt on my car today and, naturally, it is the inside belt so all the others have to come off first. I'm beginning to appreciate the serpentine belt design.
