945 slipped brake pad shim/rotor damage (photos) - what went wrong? 900 1994

I replaced the rotors and pads on my wife's wagon in December. I used PBR DeLuxe pads and Zimmerman rotors from FCPGroton. I don't drive the car too much, but recently I did and noticed a noise when braking. I changed from winter tires to summer tires this weekend, and got to see what was causing the noise.

As you can see, the anti-squeal shim became dislodged, and was rubbing on the rotor hat. It made a groove at least 1/8" deep.

Needless to say, I removed the shims! I can't remember if the pads came with the shims attached, or if I ordered the shims separately, and installed them. Does anybody have advice about that? It appears that there is no mechanical way to keep the shims in place. If they become detached from the pad, they are free to float around. Should I replace this rotor? Is the groove deep enough that the strength of the rotor is compromised?
Here is what the pads looked like when I removed them. The shims were slightly attached to the pad backing plate, but I could easily break them free with my fingers.

I obviously did not do a very good job replacing these brakes! Maybe I was thinking too much about 240 brakes - thier shims are held in place by the pins, and can't move. I guess this was another example of learning from experience!

I would replace the rotor ASAP. About 7:00 this evening I was driving down the interstate and saw a car on the othe side raising a lot of dust. At first I thought it was on fire It was near a busy interchange, and I thought this car was on one of the exit ramps, but when it went below the horizon, I realized it was going down an embankment. A few seconds later over the guard rail a wheel came bouncing my way at 70 MPH. It wasn't a near miss for me, but it was a sight to behold, bouncing 8 to 10 feet in the air. The best I could see in the rear view mirror, no one hit the tire and it bounced safely off the side of the road.

I don't know the fate of the driver of the car, however several cars traveling in the same direction as the car in question had stopped and it was about 1 1/2 miles before the next available exit to turn around.

We all hate to spend money when it isn't necessary, but in this case it is.

    Scary problem... good pics.

I just installed Metal Master pads from FCP, with the Beck-Arnley shims they sell (separately). The shims have a crack-n-peel adhesive surface that faces the pad. The shims look pretty much like what you've got there. I'm guessing in your case, the adhesive softened up, or the adhesion was never up to snuff between the pad & shim to begin with. I'll definitely keep an eye on mine.

The pads I removed were OE with OE shims (PO had all maint. done at the dealer, so I think that's a safe assumption). Those shims clip around the edges of the pad, which would prevent that kind of movement:

If you have a noise problem using just the brake grease, a trip to the dealer for OE shims might be in order...

PS: I'd suggest you give Nick at FCP a call... I wouldn't be surprised if he makes it right with a new rotor, and maybe they'll offer some better shims.

    Jim,

You wrote what I wanted to write verbatim...same pads, rotors...FCP Groton. '94 945T. I too was putting on the summer tires and noticed the same thing on my right front rotor. I removed the shims and re-installed the pads with only the Sil-Glide (I think that's what its called). I still have the shims on the left side but they aren't creating a problem, actually since I removed the shims from the right side there's been some steering wheel "wobble" when I brake. Hopefully it will go away when I remove the right side shims.

My gouge isn't as severe as your, only about one or two millimeters. I had seen a posting about this same thing not long ago and the advice was to keep using the rotor...which I plan to do. In your case though I would recommend getting a new rotor if only for peace of mind. I'm not sure how thick that portion of the rotor is but 1/8" sounds like alot.

Oh, and thanks for the great pictures. I tried to verbally explain to my wife what happened, anytime I talk tech she shuts down and stops listening. The pics made the explanation quick and interesting.

Good to know, since I have people move here from various parts of the country. I truly have never seen these shims, and couldn't discern the round brass dowels that help to secure the pad in the caliper on his picture...I like my Volvo pads...thanx for the insight on things I may see in the future.

I experienced the EXACT same problem with my 95 940; the pics looked like my car. Turns out the only pads that come with integral shims are from Texar (if i remember correctly). Bought them, no further problems. I will never again purchase separate shims for any car.

    good luck

i've seen that once before. however, it was another shop that performed the repair and we got it for the "brake noise". the shims used were not correct and we wrote the problem off to that. 1 rotor was completely cut off and the other had started cutting into it. that 1 looked just like yours does now. i'd be leary of using it. if the hub portion seperates from the rotor portion, the wheel will continue to roll while the rotor is clamped in the caliper. good luck, chuck.

Hard to tell the size of those pads from the picture, but...check your records, did you purchase D508D pads, or D1198D pads. I only use Volvo on the 940's and 850's, so I'm not certain what type of shims come with aftermarket pads, but I do know that 940 pads have the shim basically built into the pad. The shims that are available from Volvo for troublesome cars that like to squeal are this funky half shim thing, part #272187. There are caliper "clips" that are often times broken, or end up lost in the shop floor. These are part number 3530863. Unless I'm mistaken, and hey, it's quite possible, I think you were sold the wrong pads.

When I bought the car, it had genuine Volvo pads. They were so dusty, I replaced them with PBR D1198D pads from IPD. After a year of two, I noticed some rattling from the right front. One of the anti-rattle springs had broken. I then replaced all four front pads with PBRs from FCP, their number 088-1456D. They are definately the correct size and shape pads. I also ordered shim set 084-2117 (Beck-Arnley). They fit, but there is no provision for them to attach securely to the pad, so these two items should probably not have been used together.
