Ball Joint and Tie Rod Recomendations 200

Any one have recomendations on good quality ball joints and tie rod ends. The OEM ones seem to last a long time but are probably big $$.

Ball Joint and Tie Rod Recomendations: Federal Mogul, TRW, MOOG 200

Federal Mogul chassis parts are my favorite for Ball Joints and Tie Rod ends. They're made with top quality steel, well lubricated, and are OEM for most of the automotive industry.

FYI, both Moog and TRW are owned by Federal Mogul (one of the largest automotive companies on the planet) and I'll gladly install any chassis part that has any of the 3 names. I recently ordered a set of Ball Joints and Tie Rod Ends from FCP Groton for my 240 and 780, and I specified that it had to say either Moog/TRW/FM on the box. When the parts arrived, they said Moog (and FM) on the box, and the parts themselves were stamped with the TRW logo in the steel castings. Be advised, FCP Groton does carry a cheaper, unbranded, line of ball joints and they accidentally sent me one of these sets. They gladly shipped me the proper parts when I called them and mentioned the error. I'm a happy camper!

Ball Joint and Tie Rod Recomendations: Federal Mogul, TRW, MOOG 200

      Fitz,
FCPgroton list the ball joints as TRW and the tie rod ends as Febi. Are the Febi tie rod ends recomended? Are these the good TRW ball joints? Interesting on my Wagon with 156K 1 ball joint had a slit boot and has play. The other ball joint no rip no play at all. Neither tie rod has any play. I was going to change both ball joints as I have front suspension totally ripped out. The tie rods I might leave for now. Figure there easy enough to get at anytime and why mess with them. My Sedan needs the tie rods though. 2 more questions for you. Do you know if the front spring seats are suppose to be different left to right? I got a black one and a gray one. The gray one is about a 1/2 taller. Seems rather strange. My strut mount/bearings seem in good condition so I think they will go back. Do you know if for the Bilstein HD's the orginal rubber bump stop is to be removed? Any advice greatly appreciated.

      Thanks,
      Yama

"Are the Febi tie rod ends recomended?"

I'm not sure. I believe Febi made the original engine mounts in your 240, but I don't know what kind of quality they have for balljoints.

"Are these the good TRW ball joints?"

Any balljoint that says TRW or Federal Mogul, or Moog is good in my book. Moog also has a new line of premium balljoints coming out, called the M2, that have zerk fittings and various other improvements over the stock balljoint. While they aren't available for Volvos yet, they've had great reviews on Dodge Dakotas, etc.

"I was going to change both ball joints as I have front suspension totally ripped out. The tie rods I might leave for now. Figure there easy enough to get at anytime and why mess with them."

I'd agree, definately change both of the balljoints now. If you are planning on having an alignment done right after your suspension repairs, you may want to consider investing the money in a set of new tie rod ends now, rather than later.

"Do you know if the front spring seats are suppose to be different left to right? I got a black one and a gray one. The gray one is about a 1/2 taller."

No, I don't know if they're supposed to be different. -but offhand I would assume that they should be the same. I'll be investigating this shortly myself since I need to change both of them on my wagon as well.

"My strut mount/bearings seem in good condition so I think they will go back. Do you know if for the Bilstein HD's the orginal rubber bump stop is to be removed?"

My strut mount bearings are shot and will be replace shortly. Sorry, I don't have the info about the Bilsteins.

        God bless,

Ball Joint and Tie Rod Recomendations 200

Got my front end set from FCP and have been enjoying a quiet, smooth, tight ride ever since. If you look on Ebay I believe that they still have a bundle set for the front end for about $10 less than if your where to get everything seperate on their website. Good Luck!

    Sincerely,

I think Fibi/Bilstein tie rod ends from Groton are good. When I bought mine they were $8 each. They only have a few thousand miles on them so far, so we'll see how they hold up over the long haul. I didn't like the Meyle tie rod I bought.

    Yama,

www.fcpgroton.com has great prices on these parts... which are the very same offered by IPD... the b.joints & t.rod ends I got from them have given me great performance for the last 15 months.

    Peace, Jon
