<title>[RWD] [200] Small clock&#x27;s not working question -posted by- DougC</title>
<description>You have to either take off the bezel, probably mangling the bezel in the process, or cut the clock open around the perimeter of the metal case. It&#x27;s easy to do. I repaired three last fall, and it was a fun project. There are two capacitors in there that you de-solder, remove, and replace. Art Benstein has some good pictures of the process. Check cleanflametrap.com. I&#x27;ll look for a recent post about it and let you know if I can find it.

<title>[RWD] [900] Best floor jack spots on 97 S90/960 -posted by- DougC</title>
<description>The cross member seems to flex quite a bit while lifting the car. I tried under the frame rails near the factory jacking points, but the floor jack took up too much room and I couldn&#x27;t slide the jackstands into place. Do you routinely use the tubular cross member that goes across between the tranny and engine pans?

<title>[RWD] [900] Best floor jack spots on 97 S90/960 -posted by- DougC</title>
<description>My car is a 97 S90. I&#x27;m assuming it is set up basically like a 960 underneath. Where are the best spots to raise the whole front of the car at once with a floor jack? I see a tubular cross member that goes across between the engine and transmission oil pans. Is that piece strong enough to lift the front of the car safely? For the rear, if I put a piece of 2x6 on the jack, can I use the center of the rear end? I&#x27;m used to 240&#x27;s and this is set up a lot differently.

<title>[RWD] [S90-V90] [1997] S90 vs. 960, what to grab off identical donor car? -posted by- DougC</title>
<description>We recently bought a 1997 S90 and I have a couple of questions:

1. Is this car identical to a 1997 960? Did Volvo just give it a new name, or did some of the parts change? Apparently, they made both models in 1997.

2. There&#x27;s a guy parting out a 97 S90 (same year and colors as ours) near me. I&#x27;m wondering if there are certain pieces that tend to break often on S90&#x27;s or that are hard to find that I should buy from this guy. What&#x27;s worth grabbing before this donor car gets recycled?

<title>[RWD] [S90-V90] [1997] Transmission Flush - S90 - Questions -posted by- DougC</title>
<description>I want to flush the transmission fluid in my wife&#x27;s 1997 960. It looks like when I disconnect the top transmission line to the passenger side of the radiator, I will be left with a female fitting. I can&#x27;t attach a hose to that. Does anyone know what kind of nipple (what thread type) I should be searching for to screw into the female fitting on the radiator that will leave me with a male end to put a hose on? I&#x27;d like to have the right fitting on hand before I open the line. It looks like it needs to be a fitting with two male ends, but I don&#x27;t know what type of threads it should have.

Other than that, I&#x27;m planning on doing the flushing the same way I&#x27;ve done it on automatic 240&#x27;s: pump two quarts out, pour two quarts in, pump two more out, two more in, etc., until it comes out clean and red.

Any information or advice would be appreciated.

<title>[RWD] [200] Rear wipers fixed -posted by- DougC</title>
<description>1993 245, reporting back: Rear wipers were not working correctly on intermittent. They would park anywhere they wanted. Regular speed was working fine. Tried two different relays. Did not help. Turned out to be the tailgate wiring through the hinges. IPD has a good price on the harnesses. Took car of the problem.

<title>[RWD] [900] [1997] Brought home 1997 960/S90 - Questions -posted by- DougC</title>
<description>(I also posted this in the S90 section.)

We brought home a new-to-us 97 960/S90 today. I have a few questions to get me started on this car. It has 98k on it. Any help and/or suggestions to help me get to know this more-modern Volvo would be really appreciated. Up until today, the newest Volvo we&#x27;ve had was the 93 245.

1. Best jacking points for floor jack?

2. Best jack stand locations?

3. It drifts lightly to the right when I let go of the wheel on the freeway. We swapped tires front to back which lessened the problem, but it still does it. Any suggestions?

4. After a 155-mile drive, it left a spot of engine oil in the driveway below the oil drain plug that spread out to the size of a fifty-cent piece. I&#x27;m hoping it&#x27;s just the oil plug gasket. Rear main seal a common leak on these cars??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

3. The manual says we need to go to Volvo to get a spare key? Is this correct? If so what does a spare key from a dealer usually cost? Remember, I&#x27;m used to 240&#x27;s.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1990] Daughter&#x27;s car suddenly died on her -posted by- DougC</title>
<description>Thanks for all the good feedback. Here&#x27;s the latest on the problem and another problem that wasn&#x27;t mentioned before that could be connected.

Latest symptom: &#x22;...all lights on dash/console/shift knob went out suddenly this morning. Do you know why none of them would work? The rear defrost light works and the blinkers, etc., work.&#x22; She doesn&#x27;t mention anything else, but I think she was one her way to work in the dark when this happened. I&#x27;ll talk to her asap to get more details.

Other ongoing problem: The speedometer and odometer have been working intermittently for a three or four months now. The transmitter in the rear end tests as Bentley says it should. Wiring from differential up into body of car appears to be in good shape.

<title>[RWD] [200] Temp compensation board -posted by- DougC</title>
<description>I followed the advice of a very knowledgeable person on this board and took a short length of lamp cord in good condition, split it lengthwise so I just had one half, cut it to just the right length, and pushed it over the two correct male counterparts. The wire went over the points snugly, and if you cut it just the right length, reassembly of the unit seemed to hold the wire in place even more (though it seemed snug enough to me already) making it extremely unlikely that the wire would ever move or become disconnected. I remember thinking how easy the repair was and how it seemed effective and not like a lousy shortcut. (The guy who recommended it doesn&#x27;t do lousy shortcuts.) Cost $0. This was three or four years ago, and the temp gauge has been great ever since. The thing I can&#x27;t remember is which points it gets connected to, but that should be easy to look up.

<description>Thanks for the comments. I don&#x27;t know if it has any service records with it. I do know that according to Carfax, it has had three previous owners. Timing belt, tensioner, and idler are brand new. The overall appearance is of a well-maintained car. What kind of gas mileage can be expected with mellow driving?

<title>[RWD] [S90-V90] [1997] 1997 S90 General Questions -posted by- DougC</title>
<description>1997 Volvo S90 sedan: 6 cylinder gas engine, 4 speed automatic overdrive transmission and independent rear suspension with locker differential. 97,000 miles. All the bells and whistles. Really nice condition all the way around.

This is what my wife is thinking of buying. I&#x27;m a 240 guy and don&#x27;t know much about the drivetrain in this S90 except that I&#x27;ve heard bad things about Volvo six cylinders. Can this be a decent DIY car? Any information would really be appreciated: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Owner wants $4800.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1990] Daughter&#x27;s car suddenly died on her -posted by- DougC</title>
<description>1990 245:

Daughter is driving along through a residential area and suddenly the engine dies and all the cluster lights come on. She pulls over, restarts the car normally and off she goes. Fuel relay was replaced at a Volvo repair shop 21k ago for $48. Crank position sensor, plugs, plug wires, cap, and rotor were replaced by me at about the same time. After the car died the other day, her husband replaced the main fuel pump fuse, cleaned the prongs that hold it, and cleaned the 25 amp fuse under the hood by the battery. Neither fuse looked bad.

So, nothing has been done that would make us feel secure that we fixed it. We&#x27;d like to feel a little more confident that it&#x27;s not going to die on her out on the freeway somewhere. Anything else we should be checking.

<title>[RWD] [200] M46 OD Problem-Reverse is Gone -posted by- DougC</title>
<description>Does it do further damage to an M46 to drive the car after reverse has gone out? Here&#x27;s a description of what transpired concerning the demise of the OD:

It was popping out of OD for a couple weeks. The solenoid, 4th gear switch and all relays and wiring checked out, then I noticed a slight slippage in 2nd on the way home. The next morning there was no reverse (clutch out = no movement + unfriendly noise from gear box).

Is it OK to drive a car with an M46 in this condition?

<title>[RWD] [200] [1991] temp guage or something else -posted by- DougC</title>
<description>I&#x27;d get rid of the temperature compensation board. I did it on our 93 after the temperature gauge stopped rising at all. Cured the problem. The job was a piece of cake. I followed a suggestion from an experience and active board member and used a bit of scrap lamp cord cut to just the right length and pushed it over the two pins. It was held in place very securely when I put it all back together and has been great for three years.

<title>[RWD] [200] PLEASE REPLY ASAP - PCV FAILURE!-HELP -posted by- DougC</title>
<description>Key out, engine not really hot: Get about a foot or two of 5/8 inch hose and stick it fully on the large nipple on top of the breather box. Take the oil filler cap off the valve cover. Blow through the free end of the hose with your mouth. You should be able to blow freely and easily, and feel your breath come out the oil filler hole in the valve cover. If you can, your breather box is probably fine.

What year is your car?
