Fuel Pump Noise and Weak Idle? 200 1986

Well the more you fix, the more that seems to need fixing. Inga is suddenly having trouble at idle. Smooth starts and nice idle at first. But she will suddenly die sitting at idle. At idle in the driveway looking for a vacuum leak or such heard a strange sound from the back. Could have been exhaust so broke out the old red neck fuel pump relay and pulled the FPR. That way you could the fuel pumps without exhaust and engine noise. The main pump is not making the humming noise from last year. It has strange sound and making a gurgling noise. The engine has started suddenly surging.

Is there a way to check the fuel pressure. What else should I check before diving into the world of changing the fuel pump.

Regards,

PT

Hi Paul,

You will have a better idea on the car's history than I do. The sound you describe is that of a main pump being starved for input. Where's the fuel level in the tank? Full? How does the sound change when you remove the tank pump fuse - #4? To measure pressure you need a gauge and adapter to the fuel rail, which is not an autozone kinda thing. There have been several recent threads where we've described our homemade solutions - Randy's is immortalized in the 7/9 FAQ. The gurgling sound may keep you from needing a pressure gauge this time - it is a pretty solid clue the main pump is not getting a liquid stream of fuel to its intake.
