horrible gasoline smell - '95 964 900 1995

This morning I got a tremendous gasoline smell in the car on the way to work. Had to open the windows to keep the air breathable. Changed the vent settings on the way home and thought I had it beat (yes, the gas cap is tight).

I put the car in the garage tonight, shut the door -then came back 20 minutes later. The smell of gas about knocked me out !!! No visible drip to the floor under the engine, or anywhere between the tank and the engine. No visible leak anywhere under the hood, but I haven't started pulling anything loose and moving it aside yet. However, nothing is apparent, whether the engine is running or shut off. The smell is definitely stronger under the hood.

I really have no idea where to start - but this smell is like I have an open gas can in the garage, it's that pungent.

Car starts and runs fine. Absolutely no difference in operation.

Any ideas ????

With all due respect. If the gasoline smell was that bad, why would you park the car in your garage?

    timc,

A couple of possible causes come to mind. This model has had a number of occurrences regarding the fuel smell. One possible cause is, as the previous poster suggested, a leaking fuel rail. The other is a tear in the rubber hose connecting the filler neck to the gasoline tank.

I've had both problems on my '94 960. The fuel rail problem was difficult to diagnose, since it leaked only when the engine was cold. Thermal expansion caused the plug in the fuel rail to expand, stopping the leak. It was visible only when the engine was started from a cold state. You could see the spray. Again, as the previous poster suggested, this is a potentially dangerous condition.

Here are a couple of places to check for more information:

    STOP! 900 1995

Don't drive the car and disconect the battery. This is a potetially dangerous situation that could cause a fire. There have been a few instances where the end cap on the fuel rail develops a leak. The fuel is under high pressure in the fuel rail making the leak even worse. Gasoline from this leak can hit hot parts of the engine and start a fire. Very dangerous.

And make sure you have the radio code when you disconnect the battery. Otherwise, you won't be able to make the radio work when you reconnect.

Fuel rail is leaking 900 1995

My indie mechanic (with a former dealership mechanic on staff) looked it over, and confirms the rail is leaking at the end, due to the pressure. He says the only fix is replacing the entire rail.

I suppose this isn't bad for an 11-year-old car with 126K, but boy, it sure waits until two weeks after I put 4 new tires on it (#*$&%^!)! The sixth corollary to Murphy's Law.....

Anybody disagree on the fix ?????

I would be willing to pay for the shipping of your old one to me. I would like to try an idea I have for a fix that I trust.

If you will ship it to me via USPS priority will send you a check for the postage on the box. (Probably in the range of $8 to $12.)

See my address in the profile.

Fuel rail is leaking 900 1995

I went through two fuel rails in one summer. One because it was old and time for replacement. One because one of the screws bolting down the rail was broken off. So when the second one went in, my motor vibrated the fuel rail to seperate and leak. Unless the rail was shoddy. Albeit the bolt was replaced the third rail.
