V-8 let us down on PROM NIGHT! -- not charging

Hi,

Well it's been a long weeekend and it's only Saturday night . . . .

Son's 83 turbo was supposed to be painted for Prom (tonight)--but it's not done yet and still at the shop. Fall back was to use wife's 245 V8--got it cleaned up nice and pretty. Went to the bank to get $ (about 30 min prior to his departure) and noticed it's not charging (voltmeter at 12- with AC and fan on).

Checked the simple stuff: ALT light on with key on and engine not running, ALT light goes out when engine starts. Battery at 12.45 with everything off, battery at 12.07 with engine running.

Only good news is his date was able to drive--well, that and we caught the problem before sending them out into the night.

We're down to one car now--and I have to get it fixed tomorrow between church and other graduation-related stuff (before other son needs it for work).

Other info: I upgraded the aternaor to a 130 AMP model a while back. I have battery voltage at the big connector on the back of the alternator. Also, I figure if the ALT light goes out when the engine starts, I must have good connectivity through that wire to the alternator--so the problem is with the alternator itself.

I'll pull the alternator first thing tomorrow and have it bench tested, but if you have ANY other ideas, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Steve A-

V-8 let us down on PROM NIGHT! -- not charging

    Thanks all,

It was a rectifier/diode pack failure. Still under warranty from P-Boys . . . car appears to be running fine for now (prom is over)

Both boys have had problems with Volvo wagons on their proms. Last time the green wire to the AC compressor shorted. No AC--and on this particular car [started life as 83 245 diesel]--no more power windows (he did'nt think to change the fuse).

    Thanks again,

    Steve A-

I really think this could be made into a sitcom. It would be hilarious. But I would just go get aftermarket one if no good. Depending on 350 or 5.0 both are pretty cheap!

Sounds like a blown (rectifier?) diode.

Thanks for the quick response. That's what I was afraid of--I guess that the bench test will confirm it one way or the other . . . .
