California V8 Swap info

My wife's 83 240 wagon is on its very last legs. This car has been in her family since new and I can't get her to "let it go". After this last breakdown (yesterday) I told her we need to non-op it or swap something fun into it as it just isnt worth getting the motor / trans rebuilt or swapped with another 4 banger. I've been researching the v8 swap for a few days now but unfortunately, we don't have the space nor the tools to attempt to do this ourselves. On top of that, we're in california so getting the car smogged would be a pain point. I used to work on Hondas and Subarus so I know you can swap a motor as long as the emissions etc are all there and the motor is newer than the car. I guess my question would be more geared toward getting help locally. Would be looking for a shop or something here that could perform most of what I need. Anyone have any ideas?

Hey research monkey glad to hear you want to do something productive with the volvo instead of trying to dump it. I was actually just on here digging around for a sway bar that will fit under an LS1 5.7L. We are a shop located in Rancho cordova northern california that specializes in performance motor swaps. We are currently putting an ls1 into a 79 240DL. Actually just had breakfast with my client monday morning and he wants this thing rolled out. I will be building a thread with pics soon, If you have questions call me at 916-457-7062 Ryan Byrd

Here's a response/bump. If you're paying someone else to do a swap -- get your checkbook in shape....it's death by a million details. I'm in the middle of pulling the 5.0L Ford that had been in mine for 19 years and putting in an LS3.

I know it isnt going to be cheap, but I would probably take 19 years to attempt to do it myself haha! Realistically speaking, how much do you think it would be "ballpark" for parts and labor?

No way to even come close to ball parking it without a TON of decisions being made about power plant, transmission and other driveline choices. I've never added up prices on my changes.....nothing good comes from that.

FWIW - I can't see anyone paying someone else to do a swap like this. Most people would end up buying another car instead.

Right now i'm looking at an LSx motor (LM4, LM7, or L33). Transmission is still TBD... I saw that STS machining makes motor mounts. Their site also mentions getting some headers and a Holly Oil Pan to clear the front cross member... Front suspension, brakes, etc. still need to be looked into.

On another note, i always create a budget with as close to actual numbers as possible that way I can cost everything out (minus labor) and see what I can do to make it happen.
