130 AMP alternator

I switched to a 130 amp alternator about 9 months ago, using a custom made alternator that I got on eBay. (The custom part is that it was in a smaller case than the usual 130 Ford alternator, so that it fit onto the alternator bracket without modification.) An odd thing happened after about 6 months. The alternator stopped charging. Since it was not a simple matter of collecting on the warranty (which was only 90 days) or getting another one at the local store, I let the car sit for a while & finally took it to an alternator rebuilder. I was surprised when they came back & said that the alternator was charging fine and they could find nothing wrong. To make a long story short, it turned out there was some kind of failure on the little wiring harness that the alternator seller had provided to make the alternator "self-exciting". I wired in the connectors from a 1993 Taurus, so that the alternator got it's excitation current from the ignition switch & the thing started charging again.

If I had it to do over, I would have bought a 130 amp alternator from a 93 - 95 Taurus at the junk yard and modified the mounting bracket to accept the larger case, as shown at these websites:

    Hello Peter-

My V8 Volvo is a '93 940 wagon. Engine: a Ford 5.0. Sadly, the original builder passed away a few years ago and I have become a very willing caretaker for this marvelous car. I have truly done my best to keep it in the best of shape but never had the background of the original build required to do "Mods to the Mod."
Situation: The front bearing has failed on the 2G alternator. This setup had only 1 lead on the B+ output side.
Bought a PA Performance 3G alternator. It is installed with fused 2Ga leads to the battery.
RJM Injection Tech 3G Alternator harness is used to complete the installation.
All pretty straight forward to this point. Except for one 12 volt lead...

Peter- The green wire on the new 3G harness needs a 12 VDC source with the ignition switch in the "run" position.
Can you help me with the location/wire color to be used for my source (Back side of the IGN SW I think).

    Thanks for your time.

    Jeff

      Jeff,
I'm sorry I didn't see your post. I haven't been to the Forum in 3 months. By now, you have probably solved your problem. If not, I looked under the hood of my car, and the only thing I can be sure is switched on with the ignition and not controlled by something else, is power to the coil. Use a 12 volt test light, clipped to ground, and probe for a wire the lights the light only when the key is switched on.

      Peter

Please excuse the ignorance but what is the standard Explorer V8 standard alternator output?

      What year and what engine?
      The 2002 4.0L engine is 130 amps
      The 1989 is 95 amps.

Go to http://www.rockauto.com and locate the alternator (under "electrical") and it will tell you.
