1990 240 blown head gasket?

I recently bought a 245 wagon. The car started but smoked like a mosquito fogging machine. I drove it about a mile before the engine quit and would not restart. I had it towed home. I think it has a blown head gasket, but do not know how to test for it, since I figure a compression test cannot be done with a bad head gasket. I was thinking remove the head, check for flatness, and replace the head gasket. Any ideas will be appreciated.
