All the suggestions below are good easy things to check into...

A couple things I didn't see mentioned.. points closed up and not opening. Not likely the problem in your case, as that wouldn't be intermittant.

My guess if the filter looks OK... is that your fuel pump is headed south. They can be intermittant when they start to go. I'd bet cold hard cash that the pump is your problem...
