My experience with thermostats lately is that they fail by sticking open.

I would first change the thermostat to see if that is actually letting the temperature drop. If the sensor were shorting or opening, I would expect the indicated changes to be more drastic.

At first I was a little intimidated by the OBD-II thing but I'm now a believer.
