clunk in transmission engaging D and R 700 1989

On a 1989 740 with 90K miles...With the car is fully warmed and idling, when I engage the automatic transmission moving from Drive to Park and back again, there is a fairly strong clunk and the car jerks. Over the road the car shifts fine, very smooth 2 to 3 and a bit more of a lurch 3 to 4, but still smooth.

What is the cause and the cure? thanks for comments.
