what am I missing?

Some firing of cylinders is evident? Have you tried spraying starting fluid to see if it will run momentarily? That would help isolate your problem to ignition or fuel supply.

What about the flywheel being on incorrectly? Was it removed and replaced? Absolutely postively sure it was replaced in the correct position? It would not matter where the distributor was pointing if the flywheel is on out of position.
