both headlights out 200 1987

A little more info, please.

Both sides out? OK. How about high beam and low beam? How about the flasher/passing signal operation? How about the front corner lights?

That car has two relays in the headlight system. Like the earlier 240s, it has the stepping relay. Mounted on the left side inner front fender, it switches power from high beam to low and also operates with the passing signal. when it steps it makes a "clink" sound.

It also has a lockout relay, a change beginning in the 1986 models. It is mounted above the driver's right toe. It engages when the key is in Position II, thus making it impossible to remove the key and leave on the headlights.

Note that it offers no such protection if the headlight switch is in parking light position.

Either of the two relays could fail and give you the no lights situation.

A little more info will help determine which, or whether a relay is at fault.

There is no fuse in the headlight circuit.

Good Luck,

Bob
