What is the condition of the twist-on connector at the speedo end of the cable? How about the collar on the speedo that the connector twists onto?

While removing the cable from a 1984 244 I broke the twist-on connector. (Got entangled with some security thingy that I had not expected, and used too much force.) Result was having to buy - from the dealer - a new cable. Not the insert, the whole thing. Yukkk.

If the same thing happened to me today, I would first search in a JunkYard for a replacement. IITC the tranny end is a square tiop that fits inside the driven gear, so the gear ratios are of no import - any cable will do.

A jumpy speedo is often caused by the spinning cable getting momentarily caught inside the outer shield. The cable is made as a tightly wound spring, so when it catches, the part from the tranny to the catch "winds up". when the catch is overpowered and released, the cable unwinds and you see a really jumpy needle.

There is a cure, using cleaning and lubing, but I haven't the details. Perhaps another brickster will provide that info.
