Hi. This info is for future new members wanting to upgrade the headlamps system.
Just on midnight of wednesday the 13, the foot light switch on my 121 quits (after 10 years or more of use - the PO never change it). Good, then is time for a change.
First of all, I need to understand the lights system. After some reading, I can suggest the following introductory article: http://www.dimebank.com/Light-up.html
Second, check the original light electrical wiring on Amazons = Hayes manual.
Third, planning the changes: I want to use the "flashing headlamp" feature on the directional indicator switch on place of the foot switch (without lost the original flash function). Many modern cars uses that configuration (and foot switches are a bit scarse here).
Four, seek tech info about a similar upgrade made a same era car with parts available on my country. The good wolksvagen bug fit the bill (also some parts are compatible between amazons and bugs). I found a clear diagram about that upgrade (on bugs) on http://www.ffcobra.com/FAQ/lights.html (the diagram is useable on Amazons).
Five: Buy the parts on the local VW parts store (4 blocks from my house). Oh, oh, the VW relay 111-941-583 (the main part on the upgrade) are unavailable (a shortage on my country). But, the old previous incarnation of that relay VW 211-941-158-31 relay is found. Some minor change on terminals code (terminal 56b was coded "F", and the flash on directional switch is named S2 dimmer switch, that relay was designed before DIN standarizaration). I check it on ww.dni.com.br (the makers of that relay under designation 0119). Also, some bug owners (on the parts store) say is a good idea to change the headlamps (from sealed beams to H4 halogen: and two bulb types are available: 55/60 watts and 100/110 watts - due the wv relay only can hand a total of 150 watts I select the 55/60 watts bulbs). Btw, total cost of parts was cheap (less of US$ 25 - thousands of german and brazilian made VW bugs made cheap prices on related parts on my country).
Six: I go under the dash on the VW bug of my brother-in-law for check details about physical installation of that relay (some remark - on the parts store- about that relay dont like engine heat, then I will put it under dash).
Seven: Hands to work. 4 hours (my eldest son help me) to made the upgrade.
Eight: Drink very cold soda (summer sun here).
I test the setup, and it is working fine. And the eurolight H4 is a real improvement.
Happy volving.
