Hmmmm... that's how a Bosch alternator mounts, of course, and '66-on B18 blocks have the mounting ear for one. I thought the Delco alt required the SwEm bracket even if the ear was present, though.

Must go do some measuring tomorrow, although Damian's setup is pretty good evidence that it works fine that way.
