You should check the condition/age of the gas cap. If it is suspect, it is easy enough to install a new one.
Also check the lines and connections on the charcoal cannister. It's the gizmo that deals with fumes from the gas tank. A lot of times the lines become loose or cracked, and you can smell gas fumes.
The cannister is about the size of a large coffee can and black with three vacuum lines coming out of the top. Mine is located in front of the air box in the engine compartment on the drivers side. Don't know if it is in the small spot with the turbo equipped cars.
