Just got my Bentley manual last night and happened to read the section about the airbag, as I was curious as well. If I recall correctly, there is a motion sensor under the drivers seat that detects abrupt stops and sends an electrical signal to the airbag which then inflates using a non-toxic nitrogen charge. The manual seems fairly detailed and described what to check for. I suggest it be your first purchase besides the car.
