Yah, a whole LOT easier. There are two screws on the back side of the ignition switch holding the electrical part to the mechanical steering lock and key part.
Takes a small flat-blade screwdriver to get them out. You can see them with an inspection mirror if you have trouble. The connector just unplugs from it. Not that hard to replace. Now replacing the lock- that is no fun. Two big "security" bolts to drill out from underneath. Lousy job.
