Any opinions on why my car died? 200 1986

Check the wiring to the alternator, expecially the ground wire, since the alternator does not ground through its bracket. Also, pull the brushes out of the back of the alternator and see if they are worn down to nubs. Your failure mode does not really sound like either of these problems, but wires and brushes are cheaper than a new alternator.
