This is in extention regarding security that was brought up in another thread. Although there are DIY kits out there, not all of them offer the option to automatically turn them off when the car is turned on. Those that do are may be nearly as involved as DIY wiring anyways, but at significantly higher cost.
Parts needed ...
- 12V Blinking LED
- 12V Relay. It's just a standard Bosch relay that if you have an existing stash of spare relays, you can use one of those too.
- Hookup wire (preferably of varying colors), (2) scotch-lock (quick-splice) connectors, (4) insulated quick-connect spade connectors, (2) uninsulated ring terminals, (2) butt connectors if extending the LED wires, electrical tape, etc.
How to wire up ...
- Black negative wire from LED to a ground. Red positive wire from LED to #87A on the relay.
- Going by mostly EIA radio color codes, yellow #30 goes to a 12V power source on the car that's constantly on. Red #86, which will switch the relay, goes to a power source that's on only when the car is on. Black #85 goes to ground. See below for tips.
- Blue #87 will be unused for this application - it is switched on when the car is switched on. In this application, tape off this connector.

General precautions ...
Whatever circuit the #30 is being tied on, make sure that it's a fused circuit. Anything hooked up to #87 and #87a needs to be within the current limits of the said fuse and the relay.
Tips: If installing the LED in the door, a possible place to tie in #30 is the power mirror and #86 on the power window circuits. If installing in the dash, the wiring for the radio works. Alternative places for power include the glove box light for constant power, the cigarette lighter for switched power.
Note that this can apply to other devices you wish to power too. Just stick to the general precautions.
-- Kane ... with the only extra note that I have not actually tried the blinking LED as offered in the link above. Ones they offered in the past have worked out for me, though.
