interchanging starter motors

Q. Are red motor starter motors interchangeable? Some folks claim that you can interchange from anything between a 122 and a 940. FCP Groton and IPD however list a #37 motor for 75-88 models (rated at .75 kW) and a #437 motor for 89 and newer (rated at 1.4 kW). I have a perfectly good motor off a B21FT that I'd like to use my '90 240.
