Engine failure! PLEASE HELP Repacement Engine 940 - 850? T5?

Hi everyone,
I own a 1990 940 estate 2.0L non -turbo with B200F engine
Problem! after concentrating on cosmetics ive lost track of the mecahnical-
over the holiday period checking my oil slipped my mind and she ran dry!! ! i know i know...
Anyway filled up and drove but in 4th and 5th gear at between 3500 and 4000 rpm it billows out smoke. i thought the worst
my mechanic confirmed it diagnosing it with "ITS F&*£$%. "
however after poking around he was confused when on start up an consistent high revving no smoke appeared.
his expctation for a piston ring failure etc from lack of oil was smoke on startup and throughout accelaration.
Any ideas?
am i living in false hope thinking the car will recover now that i have filled with oil and put in anti smoke?????
help!?!?
i want to be prepared so am looking at new engine options, easiest would be simply a straight swap for B200F or E unit,
but i want to use oppertunity to upgrade either for performance or an engine with low mileage but with the least amount of hassle.
what else could i put in that wouldnt need too much more work- dont want to touch gearbox etc,
whats the newest engine that would work in my 940 - a 960?
where is the best place to source? and what should i expect to pay for the unit.
