He doesn't need the VIN number. The radio model # and serial # will suffice. Try another dealer. DO expect to give them your VIN and registration information. They are supposed to do this to prevent theft but they also will update the number in the Volvo N.A. online computer- in the future you'd be able to go to any Volvo dealer to get your code if you lost it.
I agree no one is stealing 12 yr old factory stereos. Try another dealer service dept and you'll find one that will be cooperative sooner or later.
Sounds like the guy was just being disagreeable. Wouldn't hurt to have a receipt from the junkyard with you to convince the guy...
