Is this a big problem?

I just removed my driveshaft so I could install new u-joints, center support, and bearing in the morning. I had been feeling vibration and the driveshaft knocking against support thru the trans tunnel. Vibration got really bad today, my mechanic confirmed it was the u-joints. After removal of the driveshaft, I noticed that the front driveshaft flange was slightly loose, even thought the center bolt seems tight. I can rotationally wiggle the flange back and forth about a 1/16th of an inch as if it is limited by hitting either side of the splines. And when I rotate the flange, (car is neutral) I can hear what sounds like very loose bearing noises. Never having done a tailshaft bearing on a Volvo, I don't know what things look like inside it. Has damage been done to the splines or something else that cannot be easily replaced? I very worried, and any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated as always. Also the tailshaft seal has never leaked. Car is 89 740 Turbo with a AW71 automatic.
