question 444-544

It is nice that the bolt pattern is shared with lots of other 60's cars (Ford, Mopars, Jeeps) but their suspension designs were different, and generally a 6 inch wide wheel made for an American car will place the inside rim too far inward to clear the PV's front suspension. On the front of a PV we have two clearance issues - first is the tie rod end sitting just inside the inner surface of the standard 15 inch steel wheel - this means that smaller diameter wheels are unlikely to fit as they will rub on that. Also, the upper arm of the front kingpin carrier extends up past the 15 inch wheels diameter, and the inside edge of a stock 15 inch rim is very close to that. So any added width (over that 4 inches) needs to be added to the outside.

Practically every 15X6 aftermarket wheel I looked at (designed for domestic cars) had 3 3/4 inch backspacing (the distance to the inner edge from the hub mounting face). 3 3/4 inches is too far, and the wheel will rub on the that upper arm. For whatever reason, the Torq Thrust II wheel is made in a standard 3 3/8ths inch 15X6 size, which fits perfectly. (The TT II wheel has an extruded rim with a welded in cast center section - which means they can and do offer custom offsets if you need it). It also fits perfectly in the rear if you don't put tires that are too fat (205/55 tires don't rub at all, 205/65 tires required the slightest of tweaks to the rear fenders).

After seeing it with tires and wheels neatly filling the fenders for a while it looks a bit odd when I occasionally put the skinny original wheels on.
