Yes the screens can be put back depending on the model year. I know for a fact the 92 960 has plastic screens that have to be hacked out of the AMM. Not a fun proposition. If on the other hand you have the metal mesh screens, they can be removed by uncliping metal ring that holds it in place. It can be reinstalled just as easily. Your fingers are the only tools you are going to need. The engine feels more lively with instant kick as soon as you touch the trottle. Try it for yourself and if you don't like it you can go back.
