Before I call the tow truck . . . 700 1988

These cool nights have done in my battery, which was on its last legs anyhow. So I put in a new battery last night. Got in, dome light comes on, put key in, crank once and it dies. No lights, nothing, absolutely dead. Did I hook up the battery wrong? I put the thinner black wire on the neg terminal and the thicker blue wire on positive terminal. Was that correct? (I sure hope so.) Maybe the new battery wasn't charged? Should I just try to jumpstart it? Or did I mess something up? Any help appreciated because the next step is the tow truck in my driveway so I can get the car back for work. Many thanks as usual.
