Wrong everyone :)

"Normal" doors aren't inherently safer. They don't save you from oncoming traffic or prevent you from falling out ... the term has nothing to do with safety.

"Suicide door" refers to the gangster era of the 30s. These doors were only found on ostentatious, luxurious vehicles, which made the owner/occupant a target for a "hit", thereby making them suicidal to have.
