It's good to read about the occasional "fix" here as well as about all the problems, so here goes my recent success: Months ago the overdrive gear in the 1990 244 (AW7+, 128K miles) started dropping out, leaving it high-revved in third gear at highway speeds. I could hear the OD relay click, the dash light arrow activated correctly. I could not hear the OD solenoid activate, however. So Friday night we jack up the car and go under for a look. I trace the white wire from the solenoid rearward along the tranny, to where it rises into the shift lever housing. Alas, the single wire has broken above the tailshaft. I snake a new wire from inside the shifter housing down to the transmission, splice it together, and now the shift problem is corrected.
The transmission still has a delayed shift from 1-2, in cold weather only, though it's been that way for two years, even after flushing the fluid. Anyway, many thanks to the Brickboard and the handy FAQs that helped solve the overdrive problem.
