Couple of ideas:
May be a weak coil causing weak spark on cranking. Can fire on ether but not gas/air mix.
Unplug one fuel injector and see if it starts. If so, could indicate that fuel pressure is too high, caused by a bad FPR, clogged return line, etc. shutting down injectors.
Sounds also like classic bad FP relay. Have you tried jumpering the relay to see if it starts. Possibly the voltage surge from the alternator at startup (on the spray can) causes the relay contacts to make, but while cranking they are not closing.
