A bad ground at the battery will cause all sorts of strange issues. Sometimes when I would turn the key the starter wouldn't go at all, and most of the time the car ran fine without any problems. I finally found the ground from the battery was attached to the rustiest spot on my car. Some work with some sandpaper and it was as good as new. I swore that it was the ignition switch for the longest time.
