Hopefully mine will come off pretty easily - as I had it off about a year back rebuilding the head.
It was also recommended to me to use the NAPA gasket 'shellac' as you call it. I did not use it the first go-round. The shop mechanic said that it would help keep the gasket in place when tightened. He indicated that sometimes the gasket would sometimes move to the side without it and therefore create a weak point. May be what happened to me on the prior setup.
