Just like rhaire set, car should be off. If you have a permanent fault, you won't be able to reset the codes while it is running, because it will immediately set the fault code again. Further, one faulty component sending erroneous information will cause other "false" codes. Therefore, if you read 4 codes, and clear 4 codes, and only 1 resets the next time you drive it, you've narrowed your search down considerably.
