speedo: 3 wires or 4? 700 1989

I'm trying to drop an instrument cluster from an '88 740 into my '89.

The speedo connector from the vehicle -- green/white, brown/white, brown, blue/red -- does not match that on the older cluster -- green/white, brown, blue/red.

I wired on the 3-pin connector, tying the brown/white and brown wires together. The speedometer / odometer now read 4x as fast / as many miles as they should.

Is that right? Brown/white wire is grounded to the brown wire?
