Although you are no doubt much younger than I, do you remember when Ford, and maybe others, had lap belts and a deep-dish safety steering wheel as safety options? After just a few year Ford dropped it, no one wanted to pay the extra.

I don't recall what the extra was. It was about that time that I installed lap belts into my 1955 Ford sedan. Never had them tested, fortunately.
