Some hack probably mangled it trying to do the air filter in it at one point. That is a little pre-mature for a distributor replacement but someone probably replaced it because the seal was leaking in the shaft. There are two seals, one around the housing and shaft (O Rings) and one around the shaft where it goes up and into the dist. This one is a pain in the ass to change and people will often sell complete distributors to fix it.
