Which dashboard type do you have? If it's the 'original' style one (As in my 1990 745), it's a five minute job to remove the instrument panel.

The instrument panel is held in by two screws, hidden behind two plastic covers on the bottom edge of the panel, in the vicinity of the clock adjuster and the panel light intensity adjuster. Once the screws are released, the panel will gently pull out. If you disconnect the multiplugs at the back of the panel, it can be completely freed from the car, at which point the bulb holders will be easy to spot...
