89 240 GL with new electrical problems

The charging system is still failing. I hesitate to blame the alternator itself right away, because last time I thought it was the alternator, it was just the small red lead wire to the alternator that had come unplugged. I looked at the wiring diagrams in my manual, but I don't understand them. How would I check to see if all the wiring and fuses are in working order in the charging system, as a step to take before replacing the alternator? Are there any common or obvious single-points-of-failure for the charging system that I can check first?
