The flame trap on my 1988 244 B230F is the newer higher-level easy-access layout. On my 1986 244 B230F the FT is the older, invisible, knuckle-scraping PITA type.
I don't know when the change over was done, somewhen between 86 and 88.
So the 1985 will have the PITA type.
What to do? Cheapest thing is to leave it as is, do one really good service, new hoses, rubber cup, ream out the fitting, and all that. Then switch to Mobil 1 or other synthetic, and forget the FT - it'll stay clean.
Next idea is to buy new parts to have the whole layout converted to the 1988 type. New oil box, new larger hose, new FT and rubber cup.
I think the IPD kit is a tube between the oil box and the rubber cup that is long enough to get the FT to the high level location and thus make servicing very easy.
All this is, of course, to communicate to Newbie about flame traps, not to correct you. You, and Don Foster and a few others, are not subject to being corrected.
