Flickering battery light

I've been reading up on why my 86 245 DL's battery light is flickering but I'm still a little confused. It comes up weak when the key is onand the engine isn't running, and persists when the car runs. Belts are good, looks like the wiring is good, but I can't test resistance from the D+ to the battery light b/c I don't know which wire to check inside the car. Anyway, will the light flicker as I described if it's a bad regulator/brushes? Where to check for continuity?
