O/D button on my stick shift 200 1982

i have a 4 speed with the overdrive button - stick shift. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. the light always comes on when i push the button but it does not always change into 5th. when i push the button off it acts as though it wants to shift into 5th as i'm shifting it out
