Crazy Electrical Problems 900 1994

Dear D960,

Good p.m. Among the causes, likely is:
(a) weak, corroded grounds
(b) loose connectors at the instrument cluster
(c) Possibly failure of the intstrument cluster flexible circuit board.

I'd start by removing the instrument cluster (see FAQs). I've done this on a 940; the 960 is unlikely to be radically different

Once you have removed the aluminum bezel (see FAQs) and the four screws that secure the cluster, pull it gently towards you, working it over the bottom clips (putty knives are a good tool to do this).

Once you have the cluster free of the housing, continue to pull it gently towards you, unless you can grasp the wire harness behind it. Very gently pull on the harness, while moving the cluster towards you.

Once you have the cluster to the point where you can turn it, so that you can look directly at the back, gently disengage the connectors from the cluster.

When the cluster has been freed from its connectors, put it on a table, face down, and examine the flexible circuit board carefully. You may want to use a magnifying glass. Look for cracks, abrasions, or other signs of wear.

If you find cracks, breaks, etc., you will need a new circuit board. I have never needed tointall one of these. It likely requires some skill with a soldering iron.

Once you've inspected the circuit board, examine the sockets, where the connectors plug in. Are the contacts clean? If any are corroded, clean them gently with very fine sand paper (300 grit or higher), just enough to remove any corrosion.

Inspect the connectors at the end of the wiring harness and clean any that need it. Re-install each connector and then reinstall the cluster.

See if this does not improve reliability.

I do not know where the cluster is grounded. Someone else likely will supply that key point.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

spook
