Knacking in Engine 700 1989

Engine knock noises are prevalent in all Volvo B230 engines, especially in the B230FT that you have, and they get worse with age. 270000 miles definitely counts as an older engine. But it's not usually damaging. Many cars make this kind of noise for years.
If you really can not live with the noise, the engine block/crank/pistons can be replaced, or the block can be disassembled and rebuilt with a new sleeve in cylinder #1. Typically the problem is due to #1 becoming egg-shaped.

Search the archives here for "Piston Slap". You'll find that you are not alone.
