transmission error 900 1995

My 95 960 sedan has a transmission problem. First, the up arrow is flashing and second, in warm weather it gets stuck in "winter" mode. A local Volvo repair shop says that there is a recurring open circuit error code and that the tranny will need to be replaced soon...Any help out there?
