Heater Valve Problem 700 1991

Yes my question is simple i went to buy a heater valve at a local autoparts shop but the only thing they had was plastic and mine is in the engine compartment because i have a.c. and it is plastic and part metal will an all plastic one work or do i have to go to the dealer and get the specific one any thoughts on my dilema would be appreciated also i was wondering if anybody could tell me from experience with parts what is a good national chain auto parts store for volvo parts
