when to change older-style engine mounts 700 1986

Just curious ... the FAQ has instructions on how to change mounts, but I'm wondering when to change. Are there obvious signs that the mounts are bad? Is this a dumb question-- if I even have to ask, does that mean my mounts are fine?

Does anyone have a rough idea of how long the pre-hydraulic, all-rubber mounts (as in my 86 744) can be expected to last? Does one typically wear faster than the other? And how about the longevity of the tranny mount (on my ZF)?

I ask partly because my engine feels like it lurches somewhat during sudden stops, like the car stops but the engine keeps going a little for a split second and then resets itself. It only does this in sudden stops, nothing else happens, and the mounts appear visually ok (although a little bulging is noticeable). The car has 180k mi.; I bought it at 108k; I have complete records back to 97k; one mount was replaced right before I bought the car, so one has 72k and the other has at least 83k on it. Then again, this might not be related to the mounts at all ...

Thanks again for all your responses to my posts last month; I still need to get to my wife's car (though her 88 245 drives 1/3 as many miles per year anyway).
