The "standard" pitch for 12mm bolts is 1.75mm. It is very close to 14
threads/inch so you can easily get confused on an 8-bolt block both for
the maincaps and also the bellhousing bolts. A 7/16" bolt screws in just
fine but is about 0.040"/1mm too small and the threads are close enough.
It is a little loose in the hole. I ran into that when I replaced the
block on the B20 I blew up in Panama and it took a long time to find
appropriate maincap bolts. Finally got them at a bolt specialist in Dallas.
Any good industrial supply or tool place should be able to furnish you the
tap you need and it will serve you a lot better than a slotted bolt. Bolt
threads are just not quite big enough, nor are they hard enough to do a good
job of cutting metal. They can clean OK, but not cut.
